Figure 3. Dog owners should be advised to regularly collect up and thoroughly clean all toys and bowls that are used outside.
Only certain parasiticide products are effective at preventing A. vasorum, and those currently licensed in the UK can be found in Table 3.
The European Scientific Counsel Companion Animal Parasites( ESCCAP)( https:// www. esccap. org /) recommends that dogs at risk of exposure should be placed on a routine preventative regimen. Yet, we do not have robust enough data to identify these dogs, beyond assessing for lifestyle characteristics. It is theoretically possible that almost all dogs in the UK can now be considered‘ at risk’ given that most will have access to environments where acquiring infection is possible. There remains a real need for more robust canine epidemiological studies to fully implement a more risk-based approach.
A licensed( monthly) worming medication may currently be the only reliable way to fully prevent disease. But constant conversations and research around this area of parasite prevention are essential to find the best way to prevent what can be a truly devastating disease, in the most balanced and appropriate way.
