Welcome
Nikki Ruedisueli , RVN | VNJ Editor | nicola @ bvna . co . uk
Welcome to February ' s VNJ , the first issue of 2025 , in the year BVNA celebrates its 60th anniversary .
BVNA has been supporting the veterinary nursing profession since 1965 , and I ' m confident I can speak on behalf of the whole team when I say we are proud to continue working with , and on behalf of , student and registered veterinary nurses across the country .
As you may already know , BVNA is running a competition every month from March to celebrate our anniversary . You ' ll find more information in the News section on page 6 – and keep an eye on the BVNA website and social media for details of each month ' s competition .
Planning is underway for BVNA Congress 2025 ( https :// bvna . org . uk / bvna-congress-2025 ). Purchasers of the first 60 tickets will be charged last year ' s prices and receive a special limited-edition 60th anniversary BVNA badge .
Also in the News section , find out how BVNA is advocating to maximise the role of the veterinary nurse ( VN ) through the document Maximising the RVN Role Under Current Legislation . BVNA has also met with DEFRA to discuss how the role of the VN can be maximised in the practice , both now and in the future .
This issue also contains the second of a threepart series on pain in ferrets by Aneesa Malik and Sofia Saraiva . In this issue , the authors discuss pain management in the veterinary hospital .
Plus , Amy Rose Hogan completes a nursing care analysis on managing intracranial pressure in a cat undergoing a craniotomy to surgically remove a meningioma ; Carla Husband reviews a case of canine hypocalcaemia caused by primary hypoparathyroidism ; and Vicky Weller discusses the treatment and care of a feline patient with aortic thromboembolism .
Linn Ekberg , Josefin Lindskog and Lena Olsén present their study investigating whether we need to clip a patient ' s hair before taking a blood sample , and Kate Norris discusses an outreach project in which she visited schools in her area to spread the word about the veterinary nursing profession .
I hope you enjoy this issue ! As always , if you have any ideas or feedback , please do not hesitate to contact us at vnj @ bvna . co . uk .
