Amy Peat sent us a case study of a maned wolf , Marley , who was brought to her practice by a local conservation centre . She was non-weight-bearing on her right forelimb , which showed significant swelling . The patient was sedated underwent radiography of the right forelimb , which confirmed there were no fractures present . When the forelimb was clipped , two puncture wounds were identified and these were treated . She was then returned to the centre as soon as possible .
Hannah Messer is an avid rodent enthusiast with a particular passion for Guinea pigs . She discusses how we can improve the welfare and husbandry of guinea pigs in the UK . Guinea pig ownership is on the increase , indicating a compelling need to improve people ’ s understanding of their husbandry and care . Veterinary nurses should aim to educate owners and advocate for improved welfare standards for guinea pigs . A standardised approach to perioperative checks ensures that all elements of a surgical procedure are considered . Surgical safety checklists ( SSCs ) increase patient safety by helping to improve communication between team members and decrease some of the risks associated with surgery and anaesthesia . SSCs are clear , concise and easy to use , and help avoid confusion around practice protocols . However , their implementation requires team collaboration and willingness to learn . This article highlights the importance of SSCs and why they should form part of practice protocols .
