BVNA champions veterinary nursing at House of Commons parliamentary reception
On Wednesday 24 June, BVNA co-hosted a parliamentary reception at the House of Commons, alongside the RCVS and BVA. The event enabled the veterinary nursing voice to be taken directly to parliamentarians and policymakers discussing the urgent need for reform of the Veterinary Surgeons Act( 1966).
BVNA President Sarah Holliday commented:“ For many years, BVNA ' s position has been clear – that Veterinary Surgeons Act reform is urgently needed and long overdue. We ensured veterinary nurses were heard while engaging with parliamentarians from across the political spectrum, urging attendees to support new veterinary legislation to benefit animal welfare, public health and wider society.
" We also highlighted the significant and crucial contributions made by veterinary nurses within the provision of veterinary services, along with the barriers caused by the existing Act. New legislation must provide veterinary nurses with the proper professional recognition they deserve – protecting the‘ veterinary nurse’ title, facilitating more effective skill utilisation, and enabling clearer routes for future career progression.”
