Gait analysis of a therapy dog

Emma qualified as a registered veterinary nurse in 2004 and has over 20 years of experience in veterinary practice, including roles as a head veterinary nurse. She holds an MSc in clinical veterinary physiotherapy and rehabilitation, alongside qualifications in clinical veterinary nursing and veterinary acupuncture. She is currently undertaking a diploma in canine massage and rehabilitation exercises. Emma is the founder and director of Vet Physio Scotland, which provides evidence-based physiotherapy and rehabilitation services for companion animals, working and competition dogs, and equine athletes. She also delivers CPD to veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses across Scotland, promoting the integration of rehabilitation into patient care and improving patient outcomes.
ABSTRACT Gait analysis is an important component of assessing the health, mobility and working capability of service and therapy dogs. This case study describes the static and dynamic gait assessment of Ugo, a 5-year-old neutered male labrador retriever working as a buddy therapy dog.
A comprehensive physiotherapy evaluation was performed, including observation of posture, limb alignment, weight distribution, muscle symmetry, range of motion and gait characteristics during walking and trotting.
Static assessment revealed a balanced stance, symmetrical musculature and normal posture, while dynamic assessment demonstrated symmetrical stride patterns, normal weight-bearing and no evidence of compensatory movement or gait abnormalities.
Palpation of the musculoskeletal system identified no pain, muscle atrophy, soft tissue abnormalities or restrictions in joint movement. The findings indicated that Ugo was in good musculoskeletal health and capable of performing his role comfortably.
The article also reviews current evidence regarding objective gait-analysis technologies and the influence of guide dog harnesses on canine biomechanics.
Regular gait assessment can support the early detection of musculoskeletal dysfunction, optimise welfare and help maintain the long-term health, comfort and performance of therapy and guide dogs.
