Welcome
Nikki Ruedisueli, RVN | VNJ Editor | nicola @ bvna. co. uk
Welcome to the April issue of VNJ. We have another packed journal for you, and an equally busy calendar for the months ahead, including Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month( VNAM) in May, BVNA Congress in October and some fantastic CPD events throughout the year.
The programme for BVNA Congress 2026 is ready: we have streams for the general practitioner, referral nurse, advanced nurse, student and VCA, so there will be something for everyone at the 3-day event. Plus, there ' s the annual dinner dance on the Friday night, for a chance to dress up in either formal wear or fancy dress – we ' d love to see you there!
VNAM is nearly upon us, and we hope you ' ll get involved, as it ' s important to show clients and the wider general public what we veterinary nurses can do. You ' ll find more details on page 7. Don ' t forget to tag BVNA in any # VNAM2026 posts on your social media so we can share what you ' ve been up to.
If you have any projects you ' ve completed in practice, an interesting case study or a dissertation you ' re proud of, consider entering the VNJ Live event at this year ' s BVNA Congress. Or, if you have an idea for a project or clinical audit you ' re yet to complete that might be suitable for a future VNJ Live event, email me at nicola @ bvna. co. uk and we can support you through the process, or you can visit the VNJ Live sessions at this year ' s Congress. You can also find more information on page 6 and on the BVNA website at https:// bvna. org. uk / vnj-live-at-bvna-congress-2025 /.
This issue of VNJ has a focus on parasites, with two articles on the topic: one on canine angiostrongylosis in the UK( sponsored by Zoetis) and another evaluating a team-based approach to small animal parasite control, which can improve animal welfare, slow the development of antiparasitic resistance and reduce environmental contamination.
Nathan Price considers the One Health initiative and how veterinary nurses can have an impact on human, animal and environmental health. Holly Rattigan discusses the importance of maintaining normotension in anaesthetised patients, explaining that monitoring blood pressure is key.
Kai Dillenburger-Keenan outlines the care for patients with pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade. Daisy Parr describes how clinical supervisors can support students in the NPL skill of evidence-based nursing and gives an example of how a student ' s reflection should be completed. Plus, Rachael McCartan discusses feline dental disease and reminds us of the importance of client education on the topic.
So, sit back and enjoy the read. As always, please contact us with any feedback you may have: this is your journal and we couldn ' t produce it without you.
