Welcome
Nikki Ruedisueli, RVN | VNJ Editor | nicola @ bvna. co. uk
Welcome to the February issue of VNJ, as we dare to look forward to spring! Last year, BVNA participated in the Defra working group in preparation for the consultation on the reform of the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966. Now is your chance to get directly involved.
It is vital that as many RVNs and SVNs engage with the consultation as possible and take the opportunity to have direct input into this landmark reform of the Veterinary Surgeons Act. Visit https:// bvna. org. uk / project / veterinary-surgeons-act-reform / to see a summary of the proposals and BVNA ' s position, and to find out how you can get involved with the process. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have a say in the future of the veterinary profession.
This issue is packed full of amazing articles. Ben Witcomb reminds us about the importance of intravenous fluid therapy, identifying the different types of fluids and taking us through fluid calculations. Emma White advises on how to provide first aid to bats presented to the practice, and Hannah Armour debates the issues around ear cropping of dogs, which, despite being illegal in the UK and some other countries, is still occurring.
Ellen Riley shares a case study of a distal humeral fracture in a dog, which was the result of a road traffic accident. Jack Smith-Wallace provides a literature review of negative-pressure wound therapy and its application in veterinary practice. Kirsten Buckland evaluates the care given to a kinkajou with suspected pancreatitis, and Natalie Briggs discusses how to stabilise dogs with hypovolaemic shock due to gastric dilatation and volvulus.
We ' ve recently started adding audio files to lots of articles in VNJ, so look out for the‘ Listen to this’ links in the digital edition if you ' d like to listen to VNJ on the go.
Now is the time to start planning your events for Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month( VNAM) in May. This year ' s theme is linked to BVNA President Sarah Holliday ' s presidential theme of compassion and empathy. Check the BVNA website for more information.
I hope you enjoy this issue and, as always, if you have any ideas or feedback, please don ' t hesitate to contact us at vnj @ bvna. co. uk.
