Treadmills have been used experimentally [ 16 ] , but it was noted that the ferrets were unable to walk consistently on a treadmill at any speed . It is important to remember that ferrets are ‘ non-cursorial ’ – they are not evolved to run far or fast , in contrast to dogs and humans .
Assisted-mobility devices ( Figure 9 and digital exclusive video ) can be used for ferrets with hindlimb weakness – for example , wheelchair-like devices that ensure the hindlimbs can be used but are supported with wheels . It is important to first receive a diagnosis from a specialist exotics veterinary surgeon ( VS ) or a VS experienced with ferrets . Assisted-mobility devices should be used only on a VS ' s recommendation , preferably with the care of a physiotherapist , and with careful evaluation of the patient ' s quality of life .
Amputation patients
Unfortunately , there is very little information on postamputation rehabilitation specific to ferrets ( Figure 10 ).
Amputation patients require multimodal analgesia , such as full µ agonist opioids , epidurals , nerve blocks , constant-rate infusions , non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs ( NSAIDs ), adjunctive agents and thermotherapy , to prevent central sensitisation (‘ wind up ’) and future myofascial pain syndrome [ 17 ] . There is a link between phantom limb complex ( a chronic pain syndrome ) and pre- , peri- and postoperative pain in dogs and cats that have undergone limb amputation [ 18 , 19 ] .
Ongoing rehabilitation is required to prevent the likelihood of pain , aches and stiffness elsewhere in the body as the animal attempts to compensate for the limb loss . Limb amputation increases weightbearing on the remaining contralateral limb [ 20 ] , so this limb should be carefully monitored for deterioration . Orthotics to support the remaining limb are an option in dogs [ 21 ] , but it is not known whether they could be used similarly in ferrets .
