Use of pulsed electromagnetic field therapy in treating canine hip osteoarthritis
USER-ALT Gillian Leung and others , University of Liverpool , UK
Coxofemoral joint arthritis is a common , painful and debilitating condition in dogs . Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy ( PEMFT ) has been shown to be an effective treatment in human arthritis patients , alleviating the symptoms of pain , stiffness and functional impairment . The authors examined the efficacy of this technology in managing pain and lameness in eight dogs with coxofemoral joint arthritis . After a single application of PEMFT there was a significant change in stride length in the affected limb compared with untreated controls . However , there was no demonstrable improvement in owner-assessed pain levels or on temporospatial performance in affected dogs .

Comparison of methods for measuring blood pressure in anaesthetised dogs
USER-ALT John H . Whittaker and others , Kansas State University , Manhattan , Kansas , USA
Arterial blood pressure is routinely monitored in patients undergoing general anaesthesia . Invasive methods such as arterial cannulation are considered the most accurate , but these can be challenging and unsuitable for some patients . The authors compare two non-invasive techniques – Doppler ultrasound and pulse oximeter plethysmography – with invasive methods . Their findings show that Doppler ultrasound measurements from the median caudal artery in dorsally recumbent anaesthetised dogs would be a satisfactory alternative to invasive techniques . However , pulse oximeter plethysmography consistently overestimated systolic arterial pressure and was not considered satisfactory .

Strategy for providing safe housing for the pets of domestic violence victims
USER-ALT Hillary L . Pearce and others , Hill ' s Pet Nutrition , Topeka , Kansas , USA
Studies in the USA have suggested that around 60 % of women who experience domestic violence report that their partner threatened to harm their pets . Similar findings in the UK and other countries indicate that creating safe havens for victims ' pets could help them to escape abusive relationships . The authors describe the development of a novel corporate – community partnership model that offers safe housing for such animals . A total of 13 dogs and six cats belonging to 13 owners were taken in and had their medical and husbandry needs met by foster carers . Five pets were returned to their owners after an average stay of 5.3 weeks and two were rehomed to new owners . The authors state that their findings may help veterinary staff to understand the challenges that can arise in these cases and how they can assist .
