Welcome
Nikki Ruedisueli , RVN | VNJ Editor | nicola @ bvna . co . uk
Welcome to the August issue of VNJ , which is packed with great content . As always , a variety of gorgeous animals feature , with this issue having clinical articles on ferrets , toads , rabbits and guinea pigs , among others .
Thank you to all of you who completed the first BVNA VN Profession Survey . We will be producing a follow-up report that will be published at BVNA Congress 2024 . The data we collect from the survey will support the Protect the Title campaign and help the Council members when they are talking to government and stakeholders about the importance of the veterinary nurse role .
BVNA is asking all SVNs and RVNs to get involved with the campaign to protect the title ‘ veterinary nurse ’ – we can ' t do this without you . See page 10 for an update on the campaign and how you can help . You can ' t complain that nothing is happening if you don ' t engage with the process . Every individual voice makes a difference . You could :
• organise an open evening at your practice to show clients around and talk about the roles of different team members , including the integral part that VNs play in patient care
• start a conversation about people ' s job titles and consider whether the word ‘ nurse ’ or ‘ nursing ’ could be removed from job titles other than ‘ veterinary nurse ’, so they better represent people ' s roles in the veterinary team , and each can be recognised and celebrated for their part in animal health and welfare
If you haven ' t already bought your tickets for Congress on 11 – 13 October , read pages 8 – 9 for a quick overview of the sessions on offer this year . Congress promises to be another great event , so visit the BVNA website at https :// bvna . org . uk / congress to book your tickets . Remember , if your practice pays for you to go , they can get a discount for five or more SVNs / RVNs to attend and complete their CPD requirements in one weekend .
If you can ' t make it to Congress , we have lots of other CPD events you can attend . You can find out more at https :// bvna . org . uk / events . We have an in-person full-day event coming up on 21 September , which is packed with practical topics such as pet obesity , airway management , suturing and basic life support . It will be held at Welsh Mountain Zoo , Old Highway , Colwyn Bay , LL28 5UY .
We also have two online webinars on anaesthesia and arrhythmias this autumn . Part 1 is on 22 October and will focus on ECGs ; Part 2 is on 19 November and will look at heart disease and anaesthesia .
