To prevent infection with endoparasites , veterinary practices have recommended treating dogs and cats with wormers every 3 months . However , there is growing concern that overuse of parasiticide products can contaminate the environment and have an impact on a range of invertebrates . There is also evidence that helminths of horses and farm animals are developing resistance to a number of overused parasiticide products , but this has not yet been evidenced in dogs and cats .

In response , a risk-based approach to the use of parasiticides is now recommended , and a five-point plan has been created by the British Veterinary Association ( BVA ), British Small Animal Veterinary Association ( BSAVA ) and British Veterinary Zoological Society ( BVZS ) to help veterinary surgeons to apply a more targeted method . Nematodes mainly affect younger animals . Their complex larval migration routes can contribute to clinical signs and transmission . Due to the variation in parasite transmission , it is important to consider the appropriate timing of treatment . The age of the host and environmental exposure to the infectious stages will play an important role in the treatment plan .
