A system for tackling stress
Sometimes , it can be difficult to assess exactly what is causing you stress and what , if anything , you can do about it . Here ' s a stress-busting system you might find helpful . It could also form the basis of a discussion with your employer , if appropriate .
Circle of concern Circle of influence
Circle of control
1 . List your core stressors on a sheet of paper .
2 . Draw concentric circles on another piece of paper , representing circles of concern , influence and control ( Figure 1 ).
3 . Place each stressor in the appropriate circle .
Things I can control
4 . Compile a list of action points to address the stressors within your control , then do the same for any stressors you can influence .
Things I can influence
Things that are outside my control
5 . Focus on resolving the things within your control and influence , and acknowledge that the other things are outside your control .

You may also wish to discuss drawing up an ‘ adjustment passport ’ with your employer . This is a record of workplace adjustments agreed between an employer and employee in relation to the employee ' s health condition or disability . It can provide a helpful reference point for you both , and for colleagues and managers .
It can also be helpful to talk to someone outside the workplace who understands the veterinary profession , such as the team at Vetlife ( www . vetlife . org . uk ). The Vetlife charity provides free and confidential support to anyone in the UK veterinary community who has emotional , health or financial problems . It has a confidential and anonymous telephone and email support service , which operates around the clock , 356 days a year . You can reach the telephone helpline on 0303 040 2551 . Vetlife also publishes related information and offers signposting to evidence-based mental health therapy and financial advice .
