Welcome

Nikki Ruedisueli , RVN | VNJ Editor | nicola @ bvna . co . uk

Welcome to the August issue of VNJ . It ' s hard to believe that we ' re already over halfway through the year . I hope you ' ve managed to grab some much-deserved time to yourself this summer .

Before you dive into this issue , I ' d like to share an update to an article published in the June issue . A clarification note has been added to the digital version of Courtney Scale ' s article on airway management in small animal anaesthesia , relating to the section on laryngeal mask airways and supraglottic airway devices . For those of you who have not yet subscribed to the digital version of VNJ , the update reads as follows : The v-gel Advanced has an improved airway seal of up to 24 cmH 2
O when using positive pressure ventilation , compared with 12 – 16 cmH 2
O in the original v-gel device .
We have lots of BVNA news for you in this issue . We introduce the new Council members , so you can see who will be representing you in BVNA campaigns and championing the veterinary nursing profession .
Alex Taylor , our senior vice president , discusses our recent campaign , Menopause and Perimenopause . It ' s a campaign particularly close to my heart , as I ' m approaching the twelfth year of this phase in my life . It ' s great that people are beginning to talk more openly about this life stage , and are discussing the small but significant changes that can be made to the working environment . This support will enable veterinary nurses who are struggling with symptoms of menopause and perimenopause to continue to fulfil their potential . Watch out for the forthcoming Menopause and Perimenopause Toolkit , with useful resources to help you and your colleagues .
VNJ is published every two months and we ' re aware that you ' d like to be kept up to date with BVNA news more frequently . We ' ve therefore created an extra digital newsletter to deliver the latest news from the BVNA Council directly to your inbox between issues , along with VNJ previews and links to articles .
In this issue , we ' ve packed in a patient care assessment of a feline patient with cardiomyopathy and an evaluation of nursing care for the critical myiasis rabbit . We have the second part in a series on the care of the brachycephalic caesarean patient . We also look at a sustainable approach to anaesthesia using capnography . Check out the student section to gain an understanding of the cardiovascular system .
Thank you to all the authors who ' ve sent us their amazing articles – VNJ would be nothing without you ! Look out for next year ' s topic list , which will be released soon , to see if there is a subject you ' d like to write about for a future issue . In addition to the topics on the list , we also welcome articles on other subjects that will be of interest to our readers and add to the evidence base of veterinary nursing care , so don ' t be shy , send your ideas by email to vnj @ bvna . co . uk .
Enjoy the issue – and the rest of the summer !
