Analysis of tear protein profiles in dogs using different collection methods

The tear film on the ocular surface contains a mixture of proteins , which may be altered by local and systemic diseases . Analysing these proteins can provide important data for the diagnosis of particular diseases and for research into new treatments . The authors compared the proteins in the tear film of dogs , collected using three different methods : microcapillary tubes , Schirmer tear strips and ophthalmic sponges . Their results show considerable differences in the number and quantity of proteins identified on laboratory analysis of samples collected using these techniques . Although the Schirmer test is a commonly used method , it provides insufficient data for use in studying particular tear proteins .

Comparison of analgesic regimens for controlling pain following mastectomy in dogs

Mammary tumours are the most common malignancy in female dogs . Surgery is considered the treatment of choice but this may cause extensive tissue damage , inflammation , oedema and moderate to severe pain . The authors compared the quality of analgesia achieved with constant-rate infusions of fentanyl alone or in combination with lidocaine and ketamine in bitches undergoing unilateral mastectomy . Postoperatively , the proportion of patients requiring rescue analgesia was lower in the group receiving the combination therapy than in those given fentanyl alone .

Respiratory , gastrointestinal , sleep and activity abnormalities in brachycephalic cats

Brachycephalic syndrome is a progressive respiratory condition in certain dog and cat breeds , resulting from breeders selecting for a markedly shortened craniofacial conformation . It has been well studied in affected dogs but less so in cats with similar features . The authors gathered data from the owners of 194 brachycephalic and 1,003 nonbrachycephalic cats on various respiratory , gastrointestinal , sleep and activity parameters in their pets . The affected cats had higher scores for snoring , sneezing , nasal discharges , coughing , dyspnoea , slow recovery after exercise , lower activity levels , increased respiratory noise , hypersalivation , halitosis and difficulty chewing .
